I've seen lots of reference to the US fiesta getting the fueller gear ratios and the Euro fiesta getting the driver's gear ratios. I've driven both versions and know this is the case but haven't been able to find the actual numbers. Does anybody have the actual ratios for each box....1st through 5th and final drive?

Everything is Googled, so it's not 100% truthful. If it's true, then the Asian gearbox is interesting as it shares everything from the US box, except 1st and 2nd gear and final drive! Also I'm doubtful about the Eurobox. Found similar figures for an older Fiesta somewhere to add the 3rd digit which is missing from the source-link. But also 1st and 2nd were way off (or maybe: more accurate? as I find the figures a bit too low).
There's something wierd there. Even the six-speed only has one differential (and thus one "final drive"). I can't imagine how it can have two final drive ratios.

I think the terminology must be tripping me up. To my old school gearhead brain, "final drive" is the same as the "differential". There is obviously something here that I don't understand. I eagerly anticipate the arrival of a shop manual (whenever they become available) so I can edgimacate myself
Thanks. I've seen that before. One feature I noticed is that they say "Neutral idle allows the clutches to disengage under deceleration". That's one feature that I'm very glad seems NOT to be in the production cars. When I let off the gas, I want to slow down, not coast.
I have my suspicions that the 2nd gear ratio is wrong in the listing for the Euro 5 speed. Even the Puma (and the Racing Puma) which have very close gears, show a 1.93:1 2nd gear. When you do the calculations, the 1.51:1 2nd gear shows an incredible rpm drop from 1st gear, and only a 400 rpm (or so) drop from 2nd into 3rd -- when shifting at 6000rpm. I know the Ford literature shows this 1.51 -- but I suspect they made an error.
LMTech, you imply that there is a Workshop manual for the North American Fiesta... Has Helms Publications yet produced such a manual? Also, you indicate that the gear ratios for the manual transmission are shown in the manual. They look weird in that the lower gear gear ratios are what I thought were being used in the North American model -- but the upper gear ratios are what I thought were being used in the European close-ratio gearbox models....???
LMTech stands for Lincoln Mercury Technician and the workshop manual is a Ford website that has all service information that has a password for Ford,Lincoln and Mercury service personel
Most modern auto trannys are programmed to shift for best fuel economy. If you want the engine to shift at higher speeds, the first rule of thumb is to move your right foot closer to the floorboard or (2) put the shifter into "L".
I usually use the first rule, but I've noticed that the tranny seems to behave more responsively with more miles on the car. Of course, it could all be in my head...
