Default fuel mileage is not that good

I dont know why but my driving habits havent changed much and my fuel mileage dropped a good bit. I went from 6Lp100km to 8.5Lp100km in a little bit under 3 weeks, seems pretty weird to me.

How is the weather? Mileage drops with the temperature.

Cold air is dense. Dense air = more fuel=more HP= less fuel economy

Are you the only driver of the vehicle?

Even still, that is a massive spike in fuel consumption. I drive the hell out of my fiesta and am still getting an average of 6.7L/100kms

Switched to some other fuel recently?

Seasonal blends can affect mileage as will ethanol blended gas.

Not sure when the 'winter' fuel starts where you are (if they even do that) but it is usually about this time here in CA.

Thought AC was the great killer of MPG. That said I haven't taken the kind of hit I would take in the Civic when the AC came on and I use it more.

A lot of factors can kill MPG.

As mentioned:
  • Gas blend
  • Outside ambient temperature
  • Use of A/C (even with defrost or defrost/floor settings)
And other points:
  • Tire inflation pressure
  • Maintenance items (like dirty air filter, etc.)
Best way to track MPGs is to use a spreadsheet and work it out that way. I'm not entirely convinced on-board MPG tracking works. At the next fill-up, record the odometer reading. Next time you fill up, record the fuel you put in, and the odometer reading. Take the distance divided by the amount of fuel, and you should have a value. Do this for a while, and you can see whether you have major issue or not. Typically, my MPGs start to drop when I put on summer (wider) tires, and depending on the brand of winter tires either MPGs stay the same or go up.
