The guy compiled info from Fuelly, showing affordable small cars and the reported gas mileage compared to EPA. I thought it was pretty self explanatory.

You'll need to take a sustained drive of at least 20 miles to get improvement. Wait till summer gas and it will get better. I'm only getting 27.5 becuase my wife drives only five miles back and forth from work.

Those numbers are pretty close for me with mine being slightly better thanks to Chicago's mild winter so far. Straight city mpg for me is around 28. Straight Hwy is almost 40. This gives me a little higher average of between 34 - 36 mpg.

Odd... fuelly.com does not seem to have an option to show specific engines (beyond categories like "Gas L4") or markets (e.g. US vs. EU vs. ...) or transmission type or other special versions (e.g. Ford SFE trims, Chevrolet Cruze Eco).

Quote:
Big city driving is terrible for gas mileage, in any season. Typically you spend at stoplights, have to brake a lot, and have heavy traffic preventing you from picking an efficient pace or coasting much. I've had my 5-speed Fiesta about 16 months now. I've never had a tank under 30 mpg, and never had a tank over 40 mpg (but I've also never had a full tank of pure city or pure highway driving). Most of my driving is suburban, and my average speed is usually between 25 and 30. I think I've managed to improve my gas mileage recently by using coasting more, worth maybe 2 mpg vs. leaving it in gear and trying to take advantage of fuel cutoff. |
