The question is whether it was a normal Mondeo, or is the next generation Mondeo/Fusion underneath that skin

I was going to say it could be testing for the Mexican market, but a quick check shows the only FoE car sold in Mexico is the Focus. The rest of their "exotic" options include the South American-specific Ikon car, EcoSport small SUV, and Courier light duty pickup. The rest of their range mirrors the U.S. Except they don't have the Taurus, our version of the Focus, and they haven't yet starred selling the 2011 Explorer.
Either way, I doubt it's any indication of testing for a future U.S. Model or power train component. With our wide range of climates available, it's not uncommon to see FoE cars doing climate tests in the U.S. Side note: several years back, probably around 1997 or so, I remember seeing a full 4-Door Ranger parked at the Allen Park test labs right on Southfield Rd. Just before the 94. I had a photo at one time, as I thought it odd and even more oddly had a camera on me (1997, remember?) to this day I can't find the photo but I can't help wondering if it was an early prototype to the Explorer Sport Trak, since at the time, the Explorer and Ranger were still similar in appearance.

It's an pre-facelift diesel Mondeo -- the current model looks even more like a Fiesta.
And yes, the rear of the Mondeo looks remarkable similar to a Fiesta sedan, which is odd because normally these cars would never meet in real life (kinda like: would polar bears meet pinguins IRL?). My question to you folk: do you like the looks of this car and could (should) it replace the Fusion?
