Default 2012 VW Beetle revealed.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle First Look - Motor Trend

I kinda like it.

It's like the current model made love to a Porsche 911 and kicked this sucker out.

Hmmm. Does have a more mature look to it.. Punch buggy may require casual dress attire... It definitely has the Porsche influence.. Retro futurism.

Looks like it should have been driven in "A Clockwork Orange"

Yep first thing that crossed my mind, Porsche, looks like a crossover between a Carrera and a Cayenne, with a buggy/old Beetle to it. Cant wait to see the convertible version. It was about time they dropped the old Beetle, it was too feminine even with out the flowered rims lol.

Why not make it a rear engine???

There was time that the VW was unique and special. Low, low price and well built with little or no options. Now its just another car. There is nothing that makes VW any better or worse than any other car.

I was going to put "do-not-want" since I'd seen a pic before but then clicked the above link. It looks better in black from this angle.

That was one of the critiques I heard about the Jetta. New low price and they're getting rid of what used to make VW a VW just to make an inexpensive car for commuters.

However, being that the new Jetta is designed to move a lot more units, I'm sure it was a wise business decision on VW's part. Now if they can just work on the cost of repairs for units out of warranty....

Fairly common move by an auto manufacturer, de-contenting the base trim levels to bring the entry level prices down. Makes the whole line up more attractive to buyers. It is sad to see vw fall in line with the rest, to beat down Toyota, it has to be done.

And what's with German cars having such high cost maintenance? Kills the used market prices, you can buy a 5 year old BMW 335i for cheeap! But take it in for brake service and BLAM! Now you pay...

Thats because there aren't many "used" parts so new ones keep a higher price. A friend told me that in Japan there was some law regarding old cars, don't remember what it said exactly, but these helped to lower the price of used parts everywhere. I think it had something to do with they had couldn't keep the cars for more than X number of years or so. Hence why there are so many placed that in-port Japanese cars to their countries.
