Default Anyone on the faction geeked on the "new" 65 stang convertable?

I have been holding out for this to happen since the early 80's! I narrowed down my old Mustang choices to just two. I already have a 1969 Mach one and the second was a 66 convertable. I was forced to junk the 66 convertable I owned in 1981. It was simply too rotted out and unsafe to drive. So, for the last thirty years I have moved a pile of 66 convertable parts from barn to attic in hope of being able to get a clean shell someday, some way. The release of this item has just blown away ANY desire I had to purchase a Fiesta ST whenever that happens. I think Fiesta ST will be widely available as wrecked or repo' within two years of release. The 15k price of the body shell is very reasonable, many thousands less than a Fiesta ST would cost.

Wink I'm ALWAYS geeked out.

My Dad is restoring a Mustang (66 and a half, I believe) right now. I do love the body style a lot more than the newer ones. I'm not sure what you mean by "'new' 65 stang." Do you have a link? I could google it, I guess.

Your dad might be restoring a 64-1/2. mress might be looking for a reproduction 'new' 65 Mustang. There's plenty of companies that do reproductions of older, popular cars like the old Cobra and even more recently as posted on the Fiesta Faction, the old 4X4 Bronco. These are remolded or stamped reproduced sheetmetal bodies on a newer chasis, with modernized engines and driveline components.

I will ask him which year it is (again) at Thanksgiving; he will be simultaneously disappointed that I do not instantly know the year by sight (even dismantled/bondo'd) and affirmed that my scattered-brained forgetfulness is a genetic trait I likely acquired from him!

When buying a collector car, a good body is everything! I sound terrible don't I. If I had it to do over, I would not have bought the Corvair I did. Any rust, turn around and run. Other parts are easy, but a bad body is $$$$$$ and never will be as good as a rust free body. The first generation Mustangs are worth a fair amount of money, so it makes sense to me. I would have gotten a Mustang if my finaces would have allowed it, but the Corvair was a lot cheaper. The Corvair as it turns out is a better looking car and far more better car.

I like it because it should mean that quality body panels will be available.

The article did say 64.5 to 66 will be available (really only some trim tweaks anyways).

The price is pretty prohibitive. You're looking at around 40K for a car that may or may not hold it's value. I'd get a real 65 Fastback, regardless.

Prohibitive! Try finding a bodyshop that will rebuild the cowl, weld in a new full floor pan and replace the rear frame rails and trunk floors for what that WHOLE shell costs. Ya ain't gonna find one that will hand back anything as solid as a brand new shell. I won't even get into front shock towers and frame rail costs. I did one side of my 69 Mach one. parts cost close to 900. labor was slave (me) and the time was close to 120 hours from cutting the tower and rail to final paint. I think 15k is pretty fair. As for resale value. I don't think people who want a solid old style Mustang convertable are going to care if it's real or the new improved version. I have driven solid, original convertables. I don't have much use for nostalgia, they are not a structurally solid car in original form and resale is just what one is worth on any given day.

I think you're taking what I said out of context. 15K is fine for the body, you just have to add EVERYTHING else. If you think 40-50K is fine for a new-old Mustang, go for it. The 2 door Bronco's go for 150k fully built out.

You can get a decently running car with a meh body for 4k so for 25k you can have a damn nice Mustang. (Added 6k for paint and repairs to meh car parts).
