Default Reverse

Sometimes when engaging reverse with the 5 speed stick, I let off the clutch and the car doesnt do anything, I hear a noise, but the car doesnt move. Then after I move the stick to neutral and back to reverse it works fine. Its as if reverse isnt engaging. Anyone experiance this? Its happened about 3 times in 2 months

Yeah. Reverse in these cars and most cars isn't synchronized. So sometimes you won't be able to mesh into reverse. Its happened to me all the time in all of my cars. I just always go from a forward gear. I choose second and then to reverse works great 99.9% of the time.

Happens frequently to me.

I can usually to feel the difference between in gear and not in gear, but it is subtle and if I'm not paying attention I still miss from time to time.

I don't thing that it does any harm, but it sure is embarrassing if there are people around.

I've had 6 other manuals and it can happen to any of them but the Fiesta seems to be worse than the others. The rest of the car makes up for it though.

Reverse was the most picky gear in my old 97 Escort. I wonder if it is just the nature of a stick? I haven't driven enough different sticks to know. (What a strange thing to say...)

That's the ticket right there.

I agree that the Fiesta is bit more picky getting into reverse than other manuals I’ve owned. Selecting a forward gear (2 since you are likely in 1 already) then going to reverse minimizes the issue.

Going from a Golf to a Civic I noticed a major problem getting into reverse. I was told that this was true of all Japanese cars. I don't currently have any problem getting into reverse ... for obvious reasons.
