Default Mechanical Door Lock?

Is there a way to open the doors without the center console button? I'm just curious because what if they button breaks? Or the Door key is broken? There are no tabs on the door.... :-p

I think this was covered elsewhere. Pull on door handle twice. Once onlocks and second opens. The way the driver handle on my car is rigged (and I think the dealer can change this) pulling on it once opens that door and unlocks everything. Two turns in the clockwise direction with the key similarly unlocks all the doors/hatch/trunk lid.

Pull on the door handle twice, do you mean on the outside of the car? Can you do this w/o a key? Not sure what you mean there lol, my bad.

No, sorry if I was not clear. I thought you were concerned about opening from the inside as an alternative to using the button. This applies to all but the inside driver's door handle. Pulling the driver's door inside handle, on my car unlocks all the doors.

From the outside you have to use the key and turn it clockwise twice. 1st unlocks just the driver's door, twice all the doors. At least on my SE hatch. Some of this can, I believe, changed by the dealer.

I believe you need the key (or a similar object) to turn a "switch" that's located on the side of the door by the latch area. The procedure should be shown in the owner's manual

The autolock feature will lock all the doors when:
• all doors are closed,
• the ignition is in the on position,
• you shift into any gear putting the vehicle in motion, and
• the vehicle attains a speed greater than 4 mph (7 km/h).
If a door(s) is unlocked, the autolock feature will repeat when:
• the vehicle slows below 4 mph (7 km/h) and then attains a speed
greater than 4 mph (7 km/h).

The lock button is more or less a back up. I seldom use it.
The locking is automatic as has been decribed.
When you pull the drivers inside door handle twice it will unlock all doors.
I have seem times, when I remove the key and open the drivers door, all doors and the trunk unlock.

Not unless the owner deactives autolock.

If autolock is deactivated and the central locking button doesn't work, then the doors can be locked as shown in the owner's manual (somewhere around page 132 to 134, depending on the edition of the manual).

On a related topic.

Do the push to start cars automatically lock when the car is off and doors are closed when the key goes out of range or after a fixed time? Or do you have to manually lock the car before closing the door or push a button on the key?
