Default Fuel economy?

I'm a little bit disappointed in my fuel economy. But I'm not sure if it's just me or if something is actually wrong with my car. I never get more than 500kms to a tank. Right now I'm at 8L/100km because of the winter. Today I filled up and reset the odometer, and after driving only 70kms I was down to a quarter of a tank. Maybe I'm just nuts.

Measure your fuel economy the hard way:

  • Fill up your car first
  • Write down the odometer reading at that time and zero the trip odometer
  • Drive until near empty
  • Refill tank
  • Write down the volume of litres or gallons you just filled/purchased
  • Write down the odometer reading at that time and trip odometer, which tell you the distance you've travelled since your last fill-up
  • Divide the volume of gas by the distance you travelled
  • Repeat a few times to get an average
If you're noticing a significant drop after getting a calculated average, I'd have it looked at. It could be as simple as using winter gas or a maintenance item, or it could be another issue.

I have been averaging about 31-32MPG with mostly highway driving. I know that this is 100% from my driving habits as the car sees WOT in almost every gear. The only problem with those numbers is that my old, vastly more powerful SVT Focus got about the same mileage and did not need to be driven in anger to get it to perform. To get advertised MPG out of my Fiesta, I need to drive the car as boring as possbile.

My driving environment is windy mountain roads and a lot of city driving. I'm also a really aggressive driver (braking hard, flooring it off the line) this probably has something to do with it, but I just can't beleive I used up a quarter of a tank to drive 70 kms.

yep, sounds like it is purely enviroment. When I drive the hilly, twisty roads along Lake Michigan, my MPG tanks. I have a lot of fun, but the gas gauge goes to empty quickly. Add some AC, and the MPG drops even lower.

Well its still a lot better than my moms 2011 Explorer. Even though it's fairly efficient, it costs over 100 to fill up compared to my 40

29 mpg is not good. If there was something wrong with the engine you would get a CEL indicating a misfire, rich mixture etc.
So you need to look elswhere. Driver is first, fuel leak, imoroper filling ( fuel station pump). Un friendly neighbors. Excessive idling gives 0 mpg.
Tires lose pressure as weather cools.
Lots of stop and go traffic and not coasting to a stop.
Manual transmission ? Staying in a lower gear too long.

How many miles do you have on the car? I noticed my average go up as I broke in the engine. I was at 33 and am now around 37.

... flooring it a bit less often may help.
