I checked a few foreign reviews of the 2 and they were pretty good. I don't see Mazda2 outselling Fiesta or even Yaris. I do think it will develop a small but loyal following like the rest of the Mazda lineup.
However that 4-speed auto is a FAIL, this car will only be worthwhile with the manual.

Hey, the seats fold flat, otherwise that car needs to stop having such a big grin on its face, well that goes for the entire N/A Mazda lineup.

If what @smallcarsrock is reporting is accurate (I'm sure it is) the Mazda 2 seems rather pointless...

For $14,730 gets you a 100HP car that gets 28 city and 34-35 highway MPG.
There quite a few cars that can do much better for less.
Including our beloved Fiesta.

Kinda makes me wonder who is actually going to buy it.

It's true, and I am rapidly losing faith in Mazda as a car company. This seems like a car that should have been introduced 3 years ago. It's outdated even before it arrives.

Technically, it did come out 3 years ago in Europe.

The prices are pretty decent I think, depending on equipment anyway, since the base Fiesta hatch starts about $1000 higher. Of course it also has 20 more horsepower (100hp is really low for a subcompact these days, btw)...blurbyu where did you get those MPG numbers? If those are legit then the Fiesta is a no-brainer - 20 more horsepower plus 5-6 more mpg for $1K more? Heck yes

I saw the mileage numbers first when @smallcarsrock posted them on Twitter.
However, they are confirmed by Inside Line via the link that iamz posted above.
(I've seen it reported on other sites as well.)

Granted the Fiesta hatch is $1000 more expensive, but the sedan is not.
The Fiesta matches the 2 in price yet provides more power and better mileage.
Also, I believe the Fiesta has a more sport orientated suspension than the 2.

Personally, I see no compelling reason to buy a Mazda 2 instead of a Fiesta.

The 2 is also lighter than the Fiesta in Europe...in fact, comparing specs on the UK "Autocar" website and using 1.4 turbodiesel models (most of the other engines don't match up), the Fiesta weighs in about 200lbs heavier than the 2. I think alot of that can be explained away by extra sound deadening in the Ford; the 2 has been criticized for being noisy inside while the Fiesta has been applauded for its refinement. And in comparing the US cars, note that the Fiesta has supposedly even more sound deadening, and a slightly larger engine.

The Mazda2 certainly says a lot about what happens when you only make the minimal changes converting a car from a foreign market to the US market.

I just like the radio on it, reminds me of the Electronic HVAC on the ST170 Focus.
