So what's with the varying 0-60 times for both cars? In one article it's said taht the Fiesta is faster and in another it's the Mazda2. Has anyone done a back-to-back comparison of the two cars?
For the Fiesta I've seen quoted 0-60 times for the manual from 8.6 to 9.5 seconds and for the Mazda2 from 9.0 to 10.0. Obviously there are some variations in temperature, traction and driver skill but it still seems to me like we should be able to nail down which car is faster... |

It's hard to say, since the Mazda is down 20hp but is also 100+lbs lighter. I think the manual-equipped cars would be pretty neck-in-neck, while the automatic Fiesta would get the edge thanks to its 2 extra gears.

Just wanted to add alittle info because it isn't quite an apples to apples comparison. Auto hatchback vs manual sedan. I would expect to see some comparison tests coming out very soon. I am really interested in the Mazda2 vs. Fiesta vs. Fit stack up, maybe throw a base mini cooper in there also.

I think others have already hit the nail on the head, but, yeah. These cars are new, 0-60 places a lot of emphasis on how the driver operates the engine, clutch, shifter. To make matters worse, a lot of fiesta reviews were done with the eurospec fiestas (different MT gear ratios?) Ford boated over for promotion purposes, or with different trim packages, transmissions, etc. Finally, of course, different temperature/wind conditions at the review's test track come into play, even driver weight! Also, if the review's engine is low-miles it may not even be fully broken in yet.
The fiesta has a power edge vs the mazda2, though it's not overwhelming when you factor in transmission differences and power-to-weight. |

With the larger amount of power present in the Fiesta I would think that even if a Mazda could get out in front 0-50 or 0-60, that lead would diminish as speeds increased. Passing 50-75 would be a cake walk for the Fiesta compared to the Mazda.

There's a hill I go up only a couple times a year, but every time I find myself in the passing lane to get by a semi or other slow-poke in the right-hand lane. In my old car the prospect of getting above 50MPH (even if I tried starting the hill around 70MPH) by the end of the hill was unlikely; similarly passing people in the mountain passes passing lane (argh, wordy) was arduous/improbable. I was glad to find that my Fiesta had little problem on this hill, despite icy conditions, and accelerated as I went up this catalyst test hill. The 0-60 speed, for me, is moot. I can accelerate to pass people that I need to pass even when going uphill in conditions my 97 Escort couldn't handle. So to me the Fiesta's acceleration and power is just fine.
When does the 0-60 matter for a car at this price point? If you can pass people, uphill, where else is such a statistic realistically important? I don't ask to sound condescending, but rather I am genuinely curious.
