Here's some pix:
Car Watch トヨタ、アイドリングストップ搭載の新型「ヴィッツ」 *売 Can't tell much else since the text is in Japanese, but I do know it comes in a lot of colors. I think the lines on this 5-door are much cleaner than the current Yaris 5-door. Looks like it was designed to be this way rather than a stretch of a 3-door.

It looks almost identical to the lines on the current Versa hatch....just with a different nose. Way to be original Toyota.

Again, yawn. I have no interest in Japanese cars. They can keep them over there. When we have choices like the Fiesta, why even mention Japanese or other Asian cars?

Those seats look really uncomfortable... and the dash is still very low-rent. And the shifter... dear zeus, that looks like a pencil with a novelty eraser top!

Choices like the Fiesta and.....what?? I'm for more choices, not fewer. I actually like the current gen Yaris, no match for the Fiesta, but I still like it. I wish Toyota would bring the smaller than Yaris EU Aygo to the US. I'm reserving judgement on the new Yaris til I actually see one.

When in doubt, make it cute...and when clueless, make it weird.
The Fiesta was designed by those with taste and talent, little clues to this abound: Look at the complex shapes of the dash top and the gauge hoods, look at how different they are shaped, yet how well they compliment each other. Look at the shape of the inside door handles, and how they work with the larger shape of the piece they're a part of (Including the tweeters). Look at the 'bat wing' style of the dash key pad, and how the concave buttons look and feel to the touch. Lovely. Cars like the Cube and various Toyotas lack that sense of integration, they're a mish mash of shapes and colors and textures thrown together based on some assumption of "Cool", they're trying to evoke an emotion, rather than defining a sense of true style. The result is that one (the Fiesta) provides satisfaction based on deeper qualities, some of which can be recognized but not necessarily identified (other than satisfaction itself). The other looks goofy or precious. Oh, what a feeling!

It looks decent, and the interior's much much better than before, but it's no Fiesta, or Fit or Mazda2 for that matter, unless Toyota's had a revolution in their chassis tuning department.
A tad jingoistic eh? There are plenty of good Asian cars to choose from. Heck, I drive a Mazda3, and it's a great car. Aside from that there's the Honda Fit, Mazda2, 5, 6 (ok...any Mazda), Hyundai Genesis, new Hyundai Elantra, etc etc. Ford does have one of the more compelling lineups at the moment, though. |
