I think the only car that would really match the Fiesta on the road would be if VW were to bring the Polo to the US. Would definitely be cool if they did it with one of their direct injected engines and the DSG.

If the subcompact market really catches on here, I'd like to see them bring over the bluemotion cars. Over here, we associate diesel engines with big rigs and super duty pick-ups, but in Europe they have little diesel subcompacts that get 60+ mpg.

VW used to have a diesel motor. Two problems with it. Particulate emissions and the stupid motor lasted forever. Hear they are bringing it back, but you have to keep the device that injects something special into the engine filled. Urea I think.

Since 2008, about 30% of Jettas sold are diesel - approx 30-35k annually. VW had diesels from 1977, TDI Diesel starting in 1995 until 2006. European vehicles are typically 40-50% diesel, as the fuel costs less there than gas (as it should, since it's less refined than petrol). Plus the mileage benefits...it's an easy choice. But, 40mpg from a Fiesta for this price???...it's hard to beat. |
