Almost got 50 mpg using the cruise control.

I got 50.3 mpg for one month (June 2011) driving over 2000 miles...there were no long trips involved...all commuting and weekend errands.

Doing something once and doing it as an average are very different things.

This weekend I had a good 20 minute stretch of absolutely perfect 2 lane road action and averaged close to 80mpg in the Prius.

I can do the 2mi stretch of hwy on my way home and reset the gage in the Fiesta and get near 60.

I AVERAGE 45 and 34 with the two of them though as sometimes real life, idiots going slow, red lights, school buses etc. get in the way.

Filled up at a gas station reset everything and got on the Freeway at 3am (for once CalTrans didn't knock us down to one lane) and got 54 MPG indicated for the entire trip there and back into Los Angeles at about 70MPH (slower than that is dangerous because of the overtake by fast drivers). Of course didn't get that for a full tank since most of my driving is 2 minutes or less in town starting with a mild hill climb and my average MPH goes down to between 14 and 16). I try to get it out once in a while but its hard competing with a Prius which gets over 40 under all conditions).

My fiancee bought an Elantra about 4 months ago. It gets probably around 33 combined MPG. On the freeway it seems to top at around 38 or 39 mpg, which is a bit below the 40 mpg claim, but I suppose it's possible.

It gets slightly worse mileage than my Fiesta, which generally averages 43-44 on the freeway, and combined @ about 34-35 mpg.

Here are some stats from Fuelly:

Model___Year___% 40mpg+_ Model Avg.
Elantra_ '11 & '12_____ 0%______30.9
Accent____2012______ 0%______ 32.3
Veloster__ 2012______ 0%_______31.7
Fiesta_ '11 & '12______6%______35.4
Focus____ 2012_______0%______31.3

Only Fiesta and Cruze have achieved 40 mpg+ (Gas models only)
No Hyundai has averaged over 40 mpg
Focus only slightly better than Elantra...but we know they get driven with more gusto

Another government agency that doesn't really do anything except eat our tax dollars. (I actually looked up what the EPA is suppose to do: "charged with protecting human health and the environment, by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress.")
