Default My custom Magnaflow exhaust

This week I had a very reputable local shop install a "resonator-back" exhaust system. I had them leave the stock resonator because I wanted as quiet as possible aftermarket sound, if that makes any sense. I'm 32 and have 2 smaller kids so I don't need to be the "loud car guy". In my opinion it looks awesome! I had them install 2 Magnaflow stainless small square tips at an angle coming out under the 3dCarbon rear valence. Sound? Sounds great from the outside, but drones horribly inside. Thats where the fun ends. I can't stand the sound inside the car, I know its an economy car, and there probably isn't a ton of sound dampening material, but holy cow! I can't even talk on the phone! So, I went back and told them I'm not happy and the guy wants to try an 18" Magnaflow muffler, it has a 14" on it now. I get that done next Tuesday, so I'll report back then, but I'm pretty certain the stock exhaust is going back on. I'll leave the 2.25" stainless res-back piping but have them weld the stock can back on if possible. Here's some dirty pics.

Anyone else have a droning issue with their aftermarket exhaust?

I had a 2000 Contour SVT and had the center resonator switched out to a flowmaster one and got some bad drone... it is hard to deal with for sure... I would think that the longer muffler will hopefully help... Good luck

My last car had bad droning issues. I was able to solve them with the use of a J pipe. Basically the J pipe welds on to the exhaust before the muffler and cancels out the frequency causing the drone. The higher the drone the shorter the J needs to be.

It looks something like this with the end capped off.

I made mine adjustable at the end so I could fine tune it.

I'll see if I can dig up the formula.

I believe the technical term for the "J pipe" is a Helmholtz Resonator. Theres a guy who makes custom mufflers for 4Runners, among other vehicles, and he uses a similar design that makes his mufflers zero drone.

I don't know how easy that would be, there isn't a whole lot of room under there...

Your exhaust is literally falling and dumping out the back...

Should went with a single oulet.

The setup I had on my car would have been what your looking for.

Trust me, better sound than a dual out.

It will be in half.

You hatch guys don't have much room after the can do you? The sedans have a good foot of pipe/tip after the factory muffler location.

On topic, mine drones like a b*tch while on the throttle. I wanted it loud, so I'm cool with it.

I don't think single our dual outlet has anything to do with it; however, having the tips angled down like that could also be causing the issues. It could be causing the sound waves to deflect back into the car. I know you can get drone with rolled tips as well.

Oh yes it does.

Especially with tips.

It gives more room for exspansion...

Does the OP know what the inlet/outlet sizes are of the droning muffler?

Wanna bet its 2-1/4" in/Dual 2-1/2" out?

That will drone.

He needs a 2-1/4inlet / 2" dual outlet.

Loose the tips, and you'll lose noise too.

a Very large part of the drone comes from the use of thin wall exhaust piping.

The 14" dual tip muffler will also make it quite loud, go for a single outlet chambered muffler and it will quiet things down pretty good

exhaust tips dont do crap for sound, well if they are several feel long then they do,
