anyone using the panel K&N airfilter that uses the stock airbox, and if so do you see any results, either performance or MPG wise?
Not holding my breath for much but Im just curious. |

I used a K&N panel filter in my Fiesta air box from July [2010] until I got the injen cold air intake in September [2010]. I don't recall if fuel economy improved or not. Throttle response may have improved slightly.
Ooo here's some test data http://www.knfilters.com/dynocharts/33-2955.pdf

I agree with eRic. I've got one in my stock box. Nothing extraordinary in terms of performance. I've read that the little 1.6 is pretty much tuned to the max for efficiency. So a filter alone isn't enough for a noticable increase in anything. I've used K&N in all my vehicles.....It can't hurt the Fiesta's performance now can it?.

no its definitely not going to hurt anything but your not going to notice any performance gains from a drop in filter. It's still the same build and restrictions from the factory airbox.

I got a great deal on the drop in so its sitting in my garage, now if the car would just get here.
With the exception of a window tint, the K&N will probably be the only mod the car gets. |

It's all psychological. You think because the throttle response is better that there is more power. Sure, colder air helps get 1 or 2 extra horsepower, but that's it. It's like adding another horse to a horse drawn carriage. You're not going to go any faster just because of the extra horse attached to the buggy.
Yeah, that's right, i compared a horse drawn carriage to the fiesta.

People get the wrong impression of the power gains achieved by these "bolt ons" . The gains are very minor.
On my 2000 ZX2SR, I had a chip in the computer, KN filter in factory cold air intake, larger cat back exhaust, shorty header, undedrive crank pulley and In a real world estimate I got maybe 7-10 more HP. Reducing the weight by 100 lbs did more to improve performance. Last edited by Iceracer; 10-25-2011 at 11:00 AM. |

yep, iceracer is correct. The actual power gain with the drop in filter is probably less than 1%. Now, 1% gain on 120 hp isn't very much, but it would really help a 500 hp engine. If I added up all the "advertised" hp gains from each part I added to my Mustang, I bet the hp would be double of what it actually is.
I ran the drop in filter on my Fiesta and did not notice much difference, but can anyone really tell the difference of 1 or 2 hp? Probably not. You do gain an advantage of having a filter that you can take out, clean, and reuse. That doesn't count for something.
