Exactly right.

Be careful about switching to full synthetic too soon. I am aware that some manufacturers use full synthetic from day one but I was told full synthetic is so slippery, it can keep an engine from breaking in.

With proper tools and barring overtightening a drain plug can last the life of the car.

My 2002 SVT Focus with 117k on it and with oil changes every 3000 miles has the original drain plug in it to this day.

none taken!

The plug hadn't been taken out before though. It's a case of you needed to be there, type thing, though. I tried a rachet and six point socket, and some wrenches after that failed, the thing must have been screwed in by optimus prime himself, maybe he assembles the engines in Thailand. The garage I took it to said they've had a few brand new cars in where the plugs are in too tight to get off by hand.
