Default Key fob stopped working..?

Hello! I just got back from a 1500+ mile trip in the Fiesta. The key fob worked the entire time. Out of nowhere, after waking up the next day after my trip, my key fob no longer worked. I've replaced the battery and had no luck. I bought the car used and only got one key. The dealer I got it from is about 530 miles from where I currently live. Anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this issue? :P

Drop into the nearest Ford dealer. Any of them should be able to help you resolve this issue.

Think this will cost any money? If so it's probably not going to happen. :P

I think it depends on the type of warranty you received as a used vehicle. I will offer this suggestion however. If you must buy a new key don't buy it from the dealer. Go to a reputable lock and key smith. Just yesterday I bought some new house hold locks and mentioned to the locksmith about getting me spare key for my Fiesta. He quoted me a $55.00 price. The only caution he mentioned was the build date. Apparently mid year some changes were made.

HAHAHA apparently I found a way to fix this on my own.

To program my key all I needed to do was put the key in the ignition, turn it to "run" and then back to "off" 4 times within 6 seconds. The car will make a beep letting me know it's in program mode. You press any button on the key fob and it will beep again to let you know the remote is programmed. After that, put the ignition in the "run" position again to turn off programming mode and you're good. Worked perfect.

you still should get a second key. the dealer should have given you two keys at delivery.

A spare key can only be programmed by the owner if s/he has at least two keys. If there is only one key, the new key and the car have to be brought to a Ford dealership to be programmed.

If you lose the only key, you're going to have to tow your car back to a Ford dealer anyways to have a new key (or new keys) and computer reprogrammed.

I'm not entirely sure why a dealer would not give two keys. Either the previous owner didn't give both keys back, or one may have been lost.

I recommend that you have three keys. That way, if you ever lose one, you still have two available.

You are correct. My response was assuming you want to buy a 3rd key prior to loosing one of the originals.

Hi carbine,

Good resource. Just wanted to let you know the Owner Guide provides instructions on how to reprogram the Remote Key Transmitters on page 143.

Your local Ford dealership can also provide you with a reprogrammed spare key. There may be a charge, but give them a call and find out first before going to someone else.

Hi ravenlord,

Always the best type of advice IMO. Thanks!

Hey GapBoyPCS,

Seriously, on the money with your recommendations!

Sterno,

Are you dating yourself? And I don't mean going out on a date with yourself.

Don't worry Sterno, you still sprite and young; jaunting around in your cheeky Fiesta!

Take care everyone!

P.S. By the way, didn't we have another key fob thread recently.

Noemi
