I think they probably are bots or lurkers. I know plenty of people who read forums but don't post. There are things you can do, like subscribe to threads, that require an account but not posting. More the merrier imo. (:

Then when the thread runs its on-topic course and gets derailed, they can have their inbox spammed by messages only to see it's just retarded banter or pictures.
