I personally think it's an absolutely asinine idea. If I have more kids, and things like this actually happen, there is no way I will be letting my children watch this crap. They are not the ones to teach children about relationships beyond friendship.

I don't think sexualizing puppets is necessary. If they want to have guest humans on the show that touch on the subject of sexual orientation, tolerance, etc, I am fine with that. The puppets should be ambiguous, outside of the already well known Ms. Piggy (what a hoglot!).

I struggle with this on many levels. On the one hand, it would be nice if there were a representation of all types in these puppets. And for the most part they achieve that! Sesame Street already transcends racial issues by being...well, inhuman things for the most part. There's a lot of guy characters but they've always been respectful of all the girls on the show (and there have always been plenty of girl children on the show).

They ruined cookie monster, IMO, with his 'cookies is for sometimes' stuff. I don't think they would ruin Bert and Ernie with this but I do think it would be too dramatic a change.

On the other hand, in countries where relationships, sexuality, and other hot topics are discussed at an earlier age, the number of out of teen pregnancies and STD numbers are dramatically lower than our own with abstinence-only education and 'don't say gay' style of rules.

I'm not sure sesame street is the place to bring this sort of thing up, though. Make a new kids show that includes gay cast members.

EDIT: I think another thought, really, is that the implication would then become that two adult men cannot be close friends, let alone live together, without being 'gay'. I'm not sure that's a message we need spread, either.

One of my thoughts as well.

I'll of course hold back my others, as there's no need to spark some pissing match between my Christian beliefs and libbies that support gay marriage.
