This just blows my mind. Less than 2 hours ago my son of nearly 40 years old was pulled over by a cop. He was not told why he was pulled over. However, the cop check his license and found out he has perfect driving record, not even a parking ticket. The cop even said that he did not make any illegal maneuver, nor is the car in any violation. However, the officer said that since he pulled him over it was mandatory to to provide something to put on a citation. There would no fine, no points nor even necessary to go to the town court. What did he put on the citation record? The fact that the car was equipped with a license plate frame provided by the dealer! Obstruction of New York License Plate. This is what we pay our law enforcement officers to do? Almost every single dealer will put a frame around the plate. Dealers are sanctioned by the state to provide sales, service , inspection and registration service and install license plates to sells cars. Go figure!
![]() What harm was done? None really, except time was wasted on a busy Saturday afternoon. Two people were inconvenience (I was waiting as to what happened to him). He must now take the time process this citation. All for what purpose? This is what gives cops a bad name! ![]() Careful if you should drive in the area of route US 20 at the transition from West Seneca going into The Town of Elma. Stop get out of you car and remove the plate frame! ![]() Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Wow! If it were me I might copy that citation and mail it with a description of the incident to your gov't rep and ask for an explanation. I thought US police had to provide just cause to do things like that?

BS it was mandatory to provide a citation! I've been pulled over by the cops once before - I think I described it here once, I was speeding by 10 MPH and hadn't brushed snow off of my car. Totally things I could have gotten ticketed for, and I would've only had myself to blame. But the officer was super nice and let me off with just a verbal warning. Baloney that your son needs paperwork right now. (I also live in NYS).

While I agree that the officer's rationale for the traffic stop was poor, I disagree on the potential harm caused by a license plate frame. Personally, I would prefer that plates be totally unadorned. In Wisconsin, I have seen everything from smoked or light-altering plate covers to year expiration stickers that fill virtually all the available blank space on a plate. Along with dealer frames that cover registration/plate expiration information, it all adds up to a more difficult job for law enforcement.

its becoming a pretty normal thing to see states pulling people over for plate frames.
I have tons of tickets(speeding and parking) and cops do not both me normally. last time I was pulled over the cop told me about the plate frame. The cops said "how will we know its a AZ plate if we cannot read it" my reply " you dont knwo what AZ plates look like and you are a traffic cop??? wow.." I got a warning and was let go.. the warning was for 10 mph over the speed limit.
