On a related note does anyone know where I can get a good Car Cover for the Fiesta?
Rodewaryer raises his hand.....Uh, I have a little experience there. Big Sky Car Covers, California Car Covers and Autosport are ones I've dealt with. I tend to go with Big Sky due to my Montana roots but I deal with Autosport too. Definitely get a custom fit cover, for a host of reasons I won't go into right now. I will say however, that I dealt with semi custom covers "in the early years" and regret it. IMO there is no such thing as one cover to rule them all. Ask me about that offline if you want more info along that train of thought. If one is all you can deal with, get a Weathershield from Autosport. They are the best at keeping anything getting 'through' the cover. Don't get the Evolution types and all those paper covers (in the end, those composite covers are basically just paper, trust me, that's what they look like when they eventually ROT off your car) get a woven cover, they last the longest. Like the Sunbrella (for those in the SW) and the Weathershield.

One more thing (that might be a dealbreaker) about covers. There is really only one way to do this thing and have all parties concerned (the cover and the car) properly considered. You never put a cover on a dirty car. Never. Once you do that the cover is compromised and the next time it goes on a clean car.... you get the picture. Hence it involves becoming fastidious with your car.

You are absolutely correct and more often than you are suggesting.

I drove a Saab 900 SPG in England for a couple years. It was a special car to me and everytime it was driven during their winter (they use salt too) and the road was wet, I hosed the car off, and especially the alloys and the suspension. I mean, every single time. If the road crap on the wheels stayed on overnight, the alloys had to be polished and not just cleaned due to that 'crap' (no hard feelings here...) etching the wheels. (They were not painted), the proof in the pudding? When I got back to the US, someone doing maintenance under the car commented that I must have been in the northeast or midwest with it due to the way it looked under there. What would it have looked like had I not rinsed it off every day? You can bet it would have had real serious corrosion.

Too bad they don't use Urea pellets. Works better than salt, doesn't corrode and its a fertilizer.

RE: Washing. If they use salt its a must, at least the underbody. Only problem is if its cold enough and the water gets into the shocks and freezes. Rough ride till the ice brakes loose.

when there's salt on the road from snow (living in switzerland) i usually just take a few minutes every two weeks or so to spray my car down. going to do the same with the fiesta. rust is scary.

No garage, unfortunately. Fully exposed to the elements 24/7. Then again, they'll be fine... They ain't Duesenberg's!

Consider a full size cover for you car. If it's outside 24/7 then that would go a long way to help preserve the finish. I would worry more about the sun than the birds.
