Granted with the AC on, the defroster is more effective, but I think manufacturers want a way for customers to exercise their AC compressors frequently with actually "knowing" that they are turning the AC on. If the AC compressor just sits around for months not doing anything, it more susceptible to frozen bearings or other malfunctions. If the main objective was really that AC air is more effective, why wouldn't they just tell you and tell you to turn on the AC when defrosting?
When I'm driving in the winter, I turn off defrost as soon as I can because it really does rob mileage and power. AND, I stayed at a Holiday Inn the other night....
