Default Planning Road Trip. Bad Idea?

So right now I am in Afghanistan, and I will be back late spring. I will be picking up my new Fiesta (hopefully) at the end of May.

I've read the user manual (yes, I am that bored out here), and it says to drive at variable speeds for the first 1,000 miles to allow the pistons to seat.

With that being said, would it be safe for me to take the car on a road trip from Minneapolis to Portland? Given I avoid using cruise control and fluctuate the speeds on the highway.

Depending on your route, the variable speeds may take care of themselves. Mix it up with major highways and state roads.

Besides, some of the best attractions/food/stories are just off of the beaten path.

I wouldn't rule out cruise. Just set it at different speeds once and awhile.

According to comments made in another thread about oil, I think it was one of te ford reps on here that stated the engine break in is done at the factory.

So if thats the case I doubt the 1000 mile vary speed is as big of a deal as engines years ago. Besides what is the definition of varying speeds anyways? 55-60 a 20mph difference? If you vary it by 1-2 mph (hills etc) I'm seeing that as varying, right?

The basic break in is done at the factory but the engine does continue to break in over time and in all reality it takes more than 1000 miles before it's completely broken in.

When I had my 2004 ZX3 2.3 I noticed that the engine didn't start to really rev freely until it had about 3000-4000 miles on it.

That said, I really doubt that a 1000 mile trip is going to hurt anything at all.
