Imperfect paint job from factory on 2011 Fiesta hatchback

I'm curious if anyone else's Fiesta has this flaw, and if yours did what would you do?

The flaw is an area of the front bumper underneath the driver's side headlight. The paint job (lime squeeze) has a rough finish here. There isn't a colour difference, but you can feel the difference and you can see it from a distance if you know what to look for. It isn't shiny and smooth like the rest of the vehicle, it is a rougher matte finish.

I asked my local dealer's service department about this. The body shop manager looked at it and took some photos to send to Ford. Ford authorized the body shop to repaint it if I choose. However, the body shop manager told me that no body shop can do as good a paint job as the factory. So, it is conceivable that the "fix" would be worse than the problem.

Not that it is a huge problem. The bumper is plastic, so it's not like it's going to rust. But, I do worry that the paint might not be as thick in this area so several years from now it might peel. Or that something was wrong with the paint mixture and maybe it'll fade at a different rate than the rest of the car so it'll look bad years from now. (I do plan to drive this for at least 10 years).

I am also a bit miffed that none of the Ford inspectors at the factory or dealership caught this before selling it to me, and now the only "solution" they're offering might be worse than the flaw.

At this point my plan is to wait to make a decision until the bumper to bumper warranty is close to expiring. I anticipate that nothing will have changed between now and then ("then" being about 2.5 years from now), so I will still be unsure of whether or not to have it repainted. What would you do? Thanks in advance for any advice.

My bet here is...

...the original bumper was damaged (probably in shipping) and was repainted before the car was released for sale. This could have happened not only at the selling dealer/original dealer, but also the collection point for Fiestas in Maryland.

I'd personally recommend having the bumper repainted so it is uniform...just make sure they remove the bumper entirely from the car and that they computer match the color.

It's never as good as factory, but I suspect in your case, it's no longer factory anyways, so you might as well get it (properly) redone...it'll look nicer and you'll have another layer of paint therefor protection from stones, etc..

Thanks for your recommendation. I did speak to someone at Ford Canada who looked up the record for my vehicle and there is no record of a repair on it before they sold it to me.

You might want to have them just polish the area in case it is simply some sort of contaminant on the surface of the paint making it look dull.

If it is actually dull though, I don't know why they can't just wet sand the whole bumper and put a few coats of clear coat over it. This way you won't have to worry about color match. Easy fix.

The body shop manager said that they would start by trying to buff it, but that there's a 50/50 chance that the buffing would go through the paint entirely and they'd have to repaint anyhow. So, if I ask them to buff it, I have to be prepared to tell them to paint it.
I've been told that the paint is mixed with the clear coat on this vehicle (not certain if that's really true).

bumper replacement?

They won't replace the bumper? It sounds like a factory defect, or damage that happened in transit or at the dealer, and they should replace the whole bumper for you.

I replaced the fender on my previous explorer by going to a junk yard that specialized in Ford's, and they sold me a fender that perfectly matched my paint, (installed all for $175, in 45 min's--my deductible was $250).

Even if I could get them to replace the bumper, I'm told that a new bumper would arrive unpainted and the body shop would have to paint it, so I'd be back to square one. You're right, though, it IS a factory defect.

I would probably see if Ford of Canada will allow you to wait until the end of the warranty period for repainting -- only because between now and then you'd probably end up with some stone chips that would need some touching up.

If it's the dealer in Waterloo, they have a really good body shop. The staff in there have been around for a long time, and they've done good work for me.

I didn't read the whole thread but, if your dealer has that little confidence in their body guys I would go to a different dealership and see what they say. The manufacturer does not do incredible paint jobs by any means, if they did all of the cars that came out would have show quality paint jobs. The bumper can be painted and it can look just as good if not better than a manufacturer paint job.

welp, MY bodyshop did a great job and matched the paint perfectly. my car took some damage w/in 2 weeks of delivery and the rear bumper plastic, rear quarter panel needed to be repainted. No problem and you cannot see it.

get it repainted, and if they don't match the colour properly, get it done again until they do. Don't let them push you around

The car is under warranty, you bought it brand new, you should therefore have anything like that fixed, and properly.

my friend bought a white fiesta and it has a flaw in the paint on the drivers door, look like a little run and next to it is an area that looks rough like over spray .
it doesn't bug him since the car is white you can hardly see it.
