To give those that aren't as familiar with aftermarket pcm tuning, here's the jist. PCM tuning, commonly referred to as custom tuning can be thought of rewriting as a set of instructions that are responsible for controlling how the engine runs.
In general, there are two types of tuning, wants and needs. The needs are for when you've changed something so drastic to the vehicle that tuning is required. These changes can be superchargers, larger injectors, axle ratio change, nitrous, cams, etc. The other side of things are the wants; owners of tuning products bought them because they have wanted something more out of their vehicle. More Horsepower, Torque, Fuel Economy, Better throttle response. The desires will range based on the person, which is one reason why it's considered custom tuning.
