No the harness in your Sync 1 car definitely won't suffice, which is the whole point of my thread. I'm building an adapter harness for this purpose. Read through everything I wrote in this thread carefully. Changing the entire dash harness is one way to go about it but probably unnecessary. Here's what the adapter harness is going to look like.

You're right. My wishful thinking/aversion to buying parts before knowing 100% was keeping me from accepting the reality of it. I plan to track down a wiring harness as I'm wanting to make it as close to factory as possible. I'm thinking of making a SFE Titanium conversion, but shipping the seats is expensive...

I’m interested in the adapter if you are making ones to sell

I might actually. Right now I had to put this on the back burner due to some other things needing more of my attention but hopefully I’ll be able to continue soon. I’m also keeping an eye out for good deals on parts. Hopefully sooner rather than later though because my Sync 1 APIM has been acting flaky as hell.

I believe I have all of the parts I need to do the conversion, and will start in probably two weeks. I am planning to go the wiring harness conversion route (got one from a ST). I got a Sync 2 APIM and screen for $90, which I planned on using for troubleshooting, but after learning there's a way to update Sync 2 to have navigation, I decided I'll probably stick with the Sync 2 rather than Sync 3 due to the huge price difference.

I'll post the progress and lessons learned as I go.

Lessons learned today: The USB cable is different from Sync to Sync 2.

Inorder to fit the Sync 2 hardware, the portion of the dash under the screen hood/bezel will need to be cut for the new bracket to fit. Tried to take photos, but my phone ran out of battery in the process.

Also, it looks like a different antenna is needed for the HD radio. The front control panel plugs in and works just fine though.

I didn't get to spend much time today, but I was itching to get started.

Hope you can get photos as I would like to see if it is a physical/architecture limitation or if it is a matter making custom brackets to make it fit/mount

I'll take photos next time. It looks like some cutting will allow the Sync 2/3 bracket to fit. I didn't do much since I've been sick, but I wanted to do some digging around to get a feel for what was going to come.

Did some stuff yesterday. I decided to send the ST wiring harness back and just work with the stock harness. There goes my behind-the-scenes stock look :(

Cut the Sync pigtail and found that only three wires need to be extended to reach the Sync 2/3 location.

Rewired the pigtail, but haven't yet reconnected it to the harness.

Ran wires from the pigtail to the media connector hub area (I think that's what it's called. The USB/SD card reader).

Removed the center console and cut holes in the bottom to allow wires to be run and for USB hub bracket to fit (not as scary as it looks at first). This is VERY forgiving since the bracket hides the area you need to cut.

I hope to get the media connector hub and APIM hooked up today to begin troubleshooting.

I highly recommend getting a pigtail for the SD card reader. I didn't, and it made the wiring process much more difficult. There isn't a part number for this since it's part of the harness.

Wow. Shocked that Ford would have two different dash assemblies just to support an audio option. Very costly for Ford to do it that way. Thx for the pics.
