Did a bit yesterday.

Found the reason I couldn't change the volume was because the front control panel does need to be rewired. For Sync 1 it uses six pins, and 8 are used for Sync 2.

Messed around with forscan with little luck, until I decided to look up a car with sync 2 and get it's as-built data by entering it into motorcraftservice.com/asbuilt and compare it to my car's as-built. I saw that there's a ton that changes, so tomorrow I'll just enter the APIM data for the Sync 2 car and work from there.

Currently everything works well except for the following: USB, SD card reader, steering wheel radio controls, and navigation. My unit didn't come with navigation, but there's supposed to be a way to activate it on Sync 2 units. Once the car recognizes that it has Sync 2, and the USB/SD card reader works I'll be able to try my hand at turning on navigation.

Once I get things working I'll try to do a write-up. I don't want to do it before then because I want to know I'm giving correct instructions.

Edit: I thought I should mention I upgraded to the HD radio, and the kicker speakers I installed a few months ago sound much, much better.

Follow-up: USB cable works. It fell it after installing since the one I used isn't a Ford part and doesn't latch like it was designed to.

I reread this thread and saw the OP found the steering wheel controls needed to be wired through the Sync 1 display wires, and that fixed that issue.

Having access to the USB port allowed for the GPS to be programmed, but I seem to have not wired the SD card reader, so the system is just giving the message requesting the maps SD card.

I think I may have also missed wiring the GPS module to the MFT system.

Bottom line: I think after wiring the SD card reader and GPS module, everything will be 100%

Congrats on the progress! You are super close. It’ll be great to have the full write up

Progress!

SD card reader was actually fine. The update file I used before didn't work, but the new one I got worked. Here's a photo of navigation on MFT, but the GPS isn't working.

After some reading I found that the GPSM needs to have a couple of pins changed. If that's all it is I should be 100% complete this evening!

Wow, can't believe missed this! I also can't wait for a full write up as this looks to be pretty technical. I am great with tools and consider myself somewhat intelligent but when things start to get deep my eyes kinda glaze over!

Thanks for putting this out there

Turns out the wiring was done correctly, but the GPS signal only works long enough to get a starting position, and only after a hard boot. Troubleshooting will have to continue...

Can’t recall but where you able to load the latest firmware? How did you determine that the GPS signal is intermittent? Is it timing out?

Again, appreciate what you are doing here.

I made an assumption that I have the latest firmware based on how the navigation crack worked, but I'm still trying to learn my way around MFT and haven't yet been able to see which version the firmware is on.

What is happening with the GPS signal is this:
Disconnect battery and reconnect and GPS signal is found. Move the car anywhere and it's lost. It may be lost without moving the car, but I haven't checked. This was the case before the navigation crack, and before any as-built data was changed.

Currently my plan is to look at firmware.

How do you know for sure that you bought a SYNC 3 screen and module? The interface on that last picture picture looks like MFT instead of SYNC 3 (comparing with the interface when googleing "SYNC 3"). I just want to make sure if I purchase the stuff you show on your components list I don't mess up by getting a MFT. If you can make this happen and you explain your process I'd definitely want to upgrade my basic sync as well.

Good luck completing the upgrade.

It is a MFT system, not Sync 3. I believe the wiring between the two is identical except for the USB/SD card reader hub, so my initial intention was to get MFT working and then buy Sync 3 with navigation, but after learning how to add navigation to my $90 MFT system,I decided that's probably good enough for me.

Back to the install: My firmware is up to date, and I'm now remembering the compass didn't change direction while driving before I completed the install, so I'm wondering if my GPSM needs to be replaced. It looks like it's a $50 part and a two minute install, so I might just do that.

Looked into the car a bit today and I'm still troubleshooting. I think maybe the answer is somewhere in forscan...

Edit: After a bunch of messing around I found a loose wire... Frustrating but now 100% working!

I'll do a write-up probably next weekend.

So the GPS and all of the other functions are working now? Congrats! This is awesome. Trying to be patient for the write up. This will be my next mod

Yep, everything's working. GPS is working, which was the only thing giving me trouble for a while, but it's good now.

Keep in mind this is a MFT system that didn't come with navigation, for those who want to save money.

Awesome for sure! I need to go back and read from start to finish. I would like to go to the latest Sync 3 if possible. If not, this is a huge upgrade. Thanks again

The wiring is the same except for the USB hub, which is actually easier for Sync 3. Shouldn't be an issue.

And my search begins for MFT or S3. Pricing is a big factor in the decision process

I recommend getting that plug I posted a link to earlier. It'll make wiring a lot easier than without it.

Also, I upgraded to the HD radio during the process and it made my already upgraded speakers actually put out some sound. Not sure if that's a priority for you.

Can you get to the Hill Assist setting via the UI? I have mine turned off and want to keep it that way after the conversion
