Did a bit yesterday.
Found the reason I couldn't change the volume was because the front control panel does need to be rewired. For Sync 1 it uses six pins, and 8 are used for Sync 2.
Messed around with forscan with little luck, until I decided to look up a car with sync 2 and get it's as-built data by entering it into motorcraftservice.com/asbuilt and compare it to my car's as-built. I saw that there's a ton that changes, so tomorrow I'll just enter the APIM data for the Sync 2 car and work from there.
Currently everything works well except for the following: USB, SD card reader, steering wheel radio controls, and navigation. My unit didn't come with navigation, but there's supposed to be a way to activate it on Sync 2 units. Once the car recognizes that it has Sync 2, and the USB/SD card reader works I'll be able to try my hand at turning on navigation.
Once I get things working I'll try to do a write-up. I don't want to do it before then because I want to know I'm giving correct instructions.
Edit: I thought I should mention I upgraded to the HD radio, and the kicker speakers I installed a few months ago sound much, much better.
Follow-up: USB cable works. It fell it after installing since the one I used isn't a Ford part and doesn't latch like it was designed to.
I reread this thread and saw the OP found the steering wheel controls needed to be wired through the Sync 1 display wires, and that fixed that issue.
Having access to the USB port allowed for the GPS to be programmed, but I seem to have not wired the SD card reader, so the system is just giving the message requesting the maps SD card.
I think I may have also missed wiring the GPS module to the MFT system.
Bottom line: I think after wiring the SD card reader and GPS module, everything will be 100%
