Anyone considering a 2015 Focus 1.0?

I want to start out by saying my 2014 Fiesta 1.0 is awesome! In nearly every way. Except for the size! After my fifth 1000 mile round trip, the car is just too small for me. I'm 6'1" 250lbs (4% body fat) so it's VERY snug. And gets a bit uncomfortable on these trips. I'd also like some of the options for long trips that others would like........Navigation and satellite radio being the main ones.

My first choice would be a new Mustang 2.3, but I think I'll put that off a year or two just to see how things pan out reliability wise. I configured it online how I'd order it and it was right at $30k. Too much for me at this point.

I took my parents Fusion to the dealer to get an oil change. While hanging out, I checked out what they had on the lot. Tons of 14 Focus models. A new salesman came up to me and I told him I was getting an oil change and was just looking. But he said he was new and probably wouldn't get many sales on a Saturday as the veteran salespeople get the deals (I felt bad for him) so he grabbed the keys to several cars. I have to say the Focus size fits much better. And the loaded ones seemed very nice! I didn't drive anything. We just went over his sales pitch on each car. We also sat in a Fiesta Titanium. Very nice as well as I had never sat in a loaded Fiesta. But again too small. Oddly they had a 2014 Focus manual still on the lot when I was looking back in January. Ouch! The sales guy said it's a running joke they will have to give that one away!

Anyway, the Focus size wise seems perfect for me. I'm hoping the 1.0 in that heavy car isn't a dud though. I assume the 6 speed manual will help. Just waiting to see the MPG on the 2015 Focus 1.0. IF it's in the 40's, then I think I may bite. I'll be driving even more in the next year so would like something more comfortable with more features. I'm a manual guy only, so the 6 speed trans is awesome!

Anyway, sorry to ramble.........anyone else considering a 2015 Focus 1.0 w/6speed manual when they come out? Just curious.
PS. NOT 4% body fat, more like 40% haha! Just wondering who read till the end!!

I was gonna say if you're 4% body fat and 250 pounds I'd be scared hahah.

I don't think I would personally.. Especially already having bought the car, couldn't justify taking the hit. Plus larger car with same motor just wouldn't jive with me. Less acceleration, not as good of handling~.

My opinion!

I guess it depends on torso length. Immediately when I sat in the Focus, it has more room for me. It's not huge mind you, but felt better/more comfortable than the Fiesta. I mean it's a bigger car so it just makes sense. BTW to Rambler, I'm not 40% haha. It's not a weight thing. Just a height thing I guess. If I didn't drive for long periods, I'd be fine with the Fiesta 1.0. I really like the car. But once you start doing 2000 mile plus runs a month, you want something more comfortable. And with more features that help on long trips. Not being negative at all on the Fiesta mind you.

Will be interesting to see what the Focus 1.0 is really like.

To Solhaven, it will be interesting to see if the 6 speed trans helps with acceleration on the 15 Focus. It's their best selling car, so I can't see them bringing out a dud. I'm hoping for like 42/43 mpg highway from the car. Handing wise, I would think the Focus is better with a wider platform but who knows. Once it's out, I hope some mag does a 1.0 comparison test......Fiesta vs. Focus.

We are suposed to be able to start ordering the focus 1.0 in late December with the cars showing up in february, of course that could always change ! Ok I'm thinking with the 6 speed and if they use the 138 HP 1.0 the feel should be close, in some of the gears ! And I could use more room on long trips ! I won't be ordering one, but when one comes in I will test drive it ! The FORD representative was at the dealership where I got my 1.0 on Tuesday with the 2015 mustang 2.3 ecoboost, he was showing it to all the sales staff there, doing a walk around, hood open, doors open, and it's F&N unbelievable ! I could go on about it forever ! Anyway whatever I do I'm going to try to wait till this time next year ! And get the end of the year discount on the 2015 whatever it is that I get, plus having another year of paying down the note on my fiesta should help ease the pain in the wallet !

You were actually able to view a 2015 Mustang?? How did it look interior and exterior? Going by the Ford site when building a 2015 Mustang, the picture they use looks odd to me. They state it's not an exact picture. I'm hoping it looks better in person.

I had no idea the 15 Focus wouldn't be available until Feb. 2015. That kind of sucks. A long wait for sure. That's a huge production gap from 14-15 models. I guess I'll have to wait like everyone else. And yes no doubt a year from now, there WILL be discounts on both the Mustang and Focus. Timing is everything to get a good deal. But limited choices come year end. Take your chance I guess.

@Neat Engine the 2015 focus will be available in the next few weeks ! But the 2015 focus WITH THE 1.0 ecoboost won't be available until about February 2015 !

On the 2015 mustang 2.3 ecoboost I seen it in June at the big mustang show here sponsored by FORD it was locked up tight ! But just this past Tuesday when I seen it at the dealership it was open, hood, doors, trunk, when you open the door t he first thing you see is the rocker panel back lite MUSTANG with ambient lighting, that looks WAY cool , then when you set in those plush leather bucket seats they soak you rite up in them, the touch screen is huge, the dash trim panels are real aluminum not the plastic look a like stuff ! Out side all the lights are LED front & back except the front turn signals which has a standard bulb, one single backup lite centered between the chrome tipped tail pipes, under the hood the only thing I don't like is the plastic coolant tank setting right up front, sticks out ! Everything else under the hood looks great ! The motor is tight up against the fire wall leaving room to access the belt an whatever else you need to in the front of the motor !

I bought a 2014 fiesta just because the focus felt smaller and more cramped. So you might have to move up to the Fusion. I'd say the fusion hybrid is your best bet.. ALthough its costly.

The focus for me had this feeling like my knees were almost being trapped. I could never stretch my knees out without hitting plastic on both sides. The fiestas dash is shorter so you can pull back those knees and stretch.

Interesting. We have a 2014 Focus and 2014 Fiesta in hatchback form. Owning both, they are totally different cars. The Focus is sufficiently larger, drives waaaay better and the build is ultra solid. This is not to say the Fiesta is garbage by any means. I love my Fiesta for what it is (aside from the pinging issue). Simply put, that they are very different cars.

I will be considering one. I bought the fiesta for the 1.0, and it fits my 5'11" 160lb body just fine. But not enough cargo room, and I die a little inside whenever anybody has to contort themselves into the back seat. I bought a car seat recently and my hopes of putting it behind the driver seat were immediately vanquished once I realized how far I'd have to move the seat up for it to fit. Fortunately my wife is smaller so it can go on the passenger side. I'm used to driving older long wheelbase model Mercedes S-class sedans. :p

So I think the Focus might be a much better fit for us. I'd get a hatch model, the 1.0L I love, and more versatility. Would probably keep the fiesta too. Supposedly a diesel F-150 is being introduced next year, if that happens I it might win over the Focus.

Thanks for the post! I didn't even think about the cargo space as it's not really an issue for me. But now that you mention it, when checking out the Focus cars the other day, it simply is a larger car so more cargo space is a given. I can't stress enough I love the Fiesta for my every day driving. My 15 mile commute to work or around town and every other daily driving commute is awesome. Add a few thousand mile plus round trips though and it's a different story. For me. Some may love it for the long hauls.

It's funny one poster said he hated the arm rests. I never paid attention to them until I saw his post. Did my 1000 trip this past week and realized they were perfect for me. So everyone is different!

The February debut of the Focus 1.0 is odd. If they go on a production schedule like the Fiesta, 4 months later they will stop production on the 2015's and gear up for the 2016 models. Anyone know when the 2014 Focus stopped production? Can you still order one? Maybe it's different from the Fiesta. Anyway even if they keep a schedule near that, there won't be many 2015 1.0 Focus models built. Best deals will be had probably next summer. Which is quite a ways away.

I have a possible 1500 mile run next week. Ouch haha!

@Neat Engine maybe it's as simple as getting better seats, see if your dealer will let you take a fiesta titanium out for a weekend test drive you know the one with nice leather seats, take it on a long weekend trip and if the seats are the problem then, search eBay for an buy some nice seats !

#23 ·
Thanks for the tip. It's my understanding however from the ST forums that swapping seats is a total pain. I sat in a Titanium Fiesta and the leather was nice, but it's the same seats, just leather. Nice, but the same. Same dimensions etc. The Focus just seemed larger.

My apologies as I should never have started this thread. It's not an anti Fiesta thread by any means. I should have just asked if anyone was considering the Focus 1.0. And not bring in my long distance driving issues.

Swapping seats is not a difficult task, done it on other cars dozens of times. I'd like to swap in leather to mine some day.

There are 3 types for fiesta I think:
- regular leather
- sport leather
- Recaro partial leather

Focus ST has recaro full leather option.

check this out - go to the 14:14 time marker

I am not Car&Driver, but my experience with the Focus 1.0 EcoBoost is quite the opposite of their opinion.
It is a super punchy & fun engine in the Focus and I never felt that it was under any stress moving the Focus.
It is a blast as far as I am concerned.
But what do I know. In Europe we have all these little pip squeak engines that we putt putt around on the autobahn at 120 mph with
no problems, but for some reason, some North Americans think we never get over 60 mph  on our little rinky dinky roads.
Oh yeah we don't have any of those on ramps to multi lane highways either, so that is how we can drive these wee tiny engines
in our Foci's etc etc.
One third of 2014 Ford Europe Focus sales are the 1.0L EcoBoost.

I remember seeing that video online. It's funny, I thought the Focus 1.0 hatchback in that video looked good. More aggressive than we have here in the US. But they hated it! Different strokes I guess. What competes with the Focus there? Keep in mind that's a 1.0 vs. a 1.6. Here in the US we have a 2.0 as the standard engine in the Focus. I'm pretty sure the 1.0 won't be faster than the 2.0. Will be interesting to see what it brings with a 6 speed manual though.

On a side note, we don't think you drive on dinky roads. That's Italy haha. We envy the Autobahn that you have. Would be hell on wheels here though as most US drivers stink. Don't know the rules of the road at all! Add all the foreign drivers that are coming here and it's 10 time worse!

PS. Any hack out there for Sky TV?

Re 5th gears comments on the Focus exteriors looks, you must remember in the UK it is cool to dis the countries favorite cars like the Focus. The car is so common on UK streets and highways that it is comparable to the Corolla or Camry in the States.
The Focus competes against the same vehicles as in North America plus a bunch of C class that are not offered in your market.
The Focus is also pitted against BMW1 and Audi A3 over here, which might seem strange for North Americans.

I did not post the video to make any claims of the 1.0 EcoBoost being a 0-60 all star. I only posted to make the point that it moves the Focus without any issues, as this seems to be the main concern for many in North America when the discussion is brought up in North America. And was not meant as a comparison or competitor to the North American Focus 2.0L engine. That said the 1.0 EcoBoost does have the same amount of ft.lb. of torque as the 2.0L, hence its ability to be able to move the Focus without issues.

And my sarcastic comments regarding dinky roads etc. was directed at those in North America whom use these reasons on why the 1.0L EcoBoost will not work on cars the size of the Focus on North American roads.

Ghiafan - Please keep contributing to these forums. The 1.0 is quite new for us here. Many of us are curious about experiences with the car / engine in your part of the world where it was been around for a few years and with higher mileage. We want to know the good, bad, and ugly as we say. Thank you!

City MPG can be pretty low with the ST, but I think some are getting above MPG ratings on the highway at 65mph or so. NOT like here as some are getting 15 plus MPG over factory specs. (unheard of in the automotive industry) It's definitely not half the MPG of the 1.0 haha. That would be in the high teens. Though achievable if you rag on it I guess. No matter some are getting decent MPG with their ST's.

Probably in another thread so I didn't see it, but what have you done to your 1.0 to handle better than an ST? A lot of suspension differences between the two cars. Would take more than springs and shocks.

An absolute GREAT time to buy a 2014 1.0 or ST right now for those interested. Few left, but great pricing for sure!

Here is a North American 2015 Focus 1.0L EcoBoost spec hatchback. It is available on the SE trim level only.
Image

As you can see Ford N.A. is allowing more option choices on the Focus SFE model, aka sunroof, nice rims, etc etc.
Notice the black honeycombe grille. This grille is part of Euro spec Sport Pak available on our 2015 Titanium trim level.
IMO gives a more sportier appearance versus the chrome grille.
Obviously a Ford employee pre-production model.
